A smaller church bearing the name Panagia once stood in the vicinity of the present-day site of the ancient church of Panagia Katholiki. Based on the accounts of ancient travellers, two arches of this temple were preserved in the vicinity of its western entrance. As a consequence of its limited dimensions, expansion became imperative to accommodate the religious requirements of the local populace. On the same spot, the New Church of Panagia Katholiki was erected in 1849, the result of numerous community residents’ efforts and the benevolent contribution of the sanctified Ioannis Menzis. This church is also the custodian of the 16th century icon of the Virgin Mary, which is currently on display in the church of Apostolos Pavlos and is partially deteriorated.
